Bento Boxes Delivered in Newport Beach, and Omakase Catering at Your Address

Newport Beach buys Japanese food for two reasons that almost never overlap, and it is worth sorting them out before anything else.

The first is Newport Center. The towers on the ring road around Fashion Island, plus Corporate Plaza and the offices along Santa Barbara Drive and Avocado Avenue, are full of law firms, wealth managers, title and escrow desks, and family offices that need lunch to arrive quiet and finished. Nobody wants a steam tray wheeled into a deposition or a closing. The second is the water. A real share of Newport entertaining happens on a Duffy, on a charter out of Lido Marina Village, or on a patio that opens straight onto a private dock off Bayside Drive, where a chafing dish is not an option.

So Wafu Bento does two different things in this city. We deliver chef-made bento boxes to a street address Tuesday through Saturday, anywhere from Newport Coast to the tip of the Peninsula. And we send a chef to your address to cook and serve a private omakase dinner, with a menu written for that one event. One is a box. The other is an evening. They run on different calendars, different price shapes, and different booking conversations, and the table below sorts out which one you are actually here for.

Both are short runs for us. Our Costa Mesa order-ahead pickup point sits under six miles from most of the harbor and roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Newport Center outside peak hours, down Newport Boulevard or across on Bristol to MacArthur and Jamboree. In Newport Beach the mileage is almost never what decides whether we land on time. The last four hundred yards is: a ferry queue, a one-way island street, or a guard gate with a list we are not on.

Which One Do You Need?

The whole decision in one line. If the food has to be good but the food is not the event, you want bento box delivery. If the dinner itself is the event, you want private omakase catering, and our chef drives to your address to cook and serve it.

Bento box delivery Private omakase catering
What it is Chef-made Japanese bento, packed cold and composed, delivered to a street address in a box that opens ready to eat. Individually portioned, no assembly, no serving equipment. Our chef loads the fish and the knives, drives to the address you give us, and serves a coursed omakase in your space. It is not a private room at a restaurant. We do not have a restaurant.
Who it is for Newport Center and Fashion Island firms feeding a closing, a deposition, or a client meeting. Households on Balboa Island, the Peninsula, and Corona del Mar. Duffy and charter hosts who need food that travels. Bayfront and Newport Coast hosts, estate and house managers, Newport Center partners entertaining a small table, and charter hosts who want the meal made in front of the guests.
Typical occasion Working lunch, board meeting, escrow closing, broker open in Corona del Mar, a boat day, a standing weekly office order. Milestone birthday, engagement or rehearsal dinner, Boat Parade week in December, a deal close dinner, client entertaining that has to land.
Price shape Premium boxes around $200, plus a value line around $70. $20 flat delivery fee, no order minimum. $4,000 to $8,000 per event, quoted and invoiced per event. There is no per head tier chart, because the menu does not exist yet when you book.
When it happens Tuesday through Saturday. Order at least a day ahead once the morning cutoff has passed. Sunday and Monday are off, though large pre-orders can be arranged with 2 to 3 days notice. Any day of the week. Events are scheduled individually for your date and are not bound by the bento delivery calendar, the delivery fee, or the cutoff.
Where it happens Your street address anywhere in Newport Beach, or order-ahead pickup in Costa Mesa. Your address. A house on the bayfront or up in Newport Coast, a firm’s private office space in Newport Center, or a chartered vessel at its slip.
How you book it Order from the catalog online and pick your date. Booked event by event. We need the date, the headcount, the address with gate or slip details, a named on-site contact, and every dietary restriction at the table. Then the menu gets written.

Wafu Bento is a ghost kitchen. There is no dining room, no bar, no counter, and no walk-in service anywhere in the operation. Everything on this page either comes to you or is collected by prior arrangement.

Drive reality from Costa Mesa Newport Center and the airport-area offices are the fastest drops in the city, roughly 10 to 15 minutes outside peak. Most of the harbor sits under six miles out. Newport Coast is the long leg, roughly 20 to 25 minutes up MacArthur and San Joaquin Hills Road, and it is the one part of the city where gate clearance rather than traffic decides the arrival.
Areas covered All of Newport Beach: Newport Center and Fashion Island, Corona del Mar, Balboa Island and Little Balboa Island, the Balboa Peninsula, Lido Isle, Newport Coast and Crystal Cove, Bayshores, Linda Isle, Dover Shores and the Back Bay, West Newport, and the airport-area offices around Birch Street, Dove Street, Quail Street, and MacArthur Boulevard.

Routing notes we actually use

We never route a Balboa Island delivery through the Balboa Island Ferry. It carries three cars at a time and the queue on a summer Saturday is unpredictable. Island and Peninsula drops go around by Jamboree and Marine Avenue, or down Newport Boulevard through the Arches interchange onto Balboa Boulevard.

The Peninsula slows badly between Memorial Day and Labor Day once Balboa Boulevard fills and beach parking eats every space, so Peninsula orders should be placed the day before rather than pushed against the cutoff. Newport Coast addresses inside guarded communities need the driver left at the gate before the window opens, otherwise the box sits at the kiosk. And the Hoag campus offices off Hospital Road and Superior Avenue have their own parking and check-in reality, which is why those orders get a suite number and a contact rather than just a street address.

If you would rather collect it yourself, Costa Mesa is the closest of our three order-ahead pickup points. Place the order in advance, pick a time, and collect.

Five boxes that fit how Newport Beach eats

Five of our ten boxes fit how this city entertains, for reasons specific to Newport Beach.

  • Wagyu Uni Bento is the box for a Newport Center closing lunch, when a firm on the Fashion Island ring wants the meal itself to signal the size of the deal.
  • Jewelry Box is our gift and presentation format, which is what an escrow closing, a broker open in Corona del Mar, or a Newport Coast client thank-you calls for when another bottle of wine will not do.
  • Kyoto Style Temari is bite-size and eaten by hand, so it works for a standing reception in a Newport Center office or a Duffy cruise where nobody has a table.
  • Traditional Chirashi travels as a single composed box with no assembly, which holds up for charters out of Lido Marina Village and Balboa Yacht Basin where the meal is opened well after it leaves our kitchen.
  • Premium Bento is the workhorse for a recurring team lunch in the airport-area offices around Birch Street and MacArthur, where everyone needs an individually packed portion rather than a shared spread.

The full catalog is on the menu and in the shop.

Standing weekly office orders

Firms in Newport Center, along Jamboree and MacArthur, and around the airport-area streets often run the same order on the same weekday. We set those up as a standing weekly delivery so nobody has to reorder. Ask about it when you book, since the terms depend on the day and the headcount.

Private Omakase Catering in Newport Beach

What the event actually is

A chef travels to your address, works from whatever surface you have, and serves a coursed omakase in front of your guests. The counter is wherever you are standing: a kitchen island in Newport Coast, an outdoor bar on a bayfront patio, a boardroom credenza off Newport Center, the galley rail of a boat in the harbor. It is not a reserved private room at a sushi restaurant, and it is not a drop-off left on a counter for someone else to lay out.

Setup takes one surface. A run of counter or table, a sink, refrigerated holding space or room for our own, and power. We do not need your stove and we do not need a commercial line, which is why this works in island houses with small kitchens and in office pantries that were never built for dinner.

The menu is rebuilt for every single event

There is no fixed omakase menu at Wafu Bento. Every event gets its own progression, written around what is genuinely good that week and around your actual table: the allergies, the guest who does not eat shellfish, the difference between a group that eats sushi constantly and a group that does not.

In a harbor town where the same circle sees each other across a whole season, that is the practical part. Hosting three times between June and September does not mean serving the same dinner three times.

Where these dinners happen in Newport Beach

Bayfront homes. Bayshores, Harbor Island, Linda Isle, and the bay side of the Peninsula. The entertaining space is the patio and the dock rather than the dining room, and guests move between inside and outside all evening. A coursed progression works here as long as it is paced for people who are standing up and looking at boats.

Island and Peninsula houses. Balboa Island, Lido Isle, and Peninsula Point. Charming, tight, and genuinely hard to service. The dining rooms in this housing stock are beautiful and not large, which suits a coursed omakase better than most people expect. The constraint here is never the room. It is the street.

Newport Coast and the gated communities. Crystal Cove, Pelican Crest, Newport Ridge, Big Canyon, Harbor Ridge, and Dover Shores on the Back Bay. Larger homes, view terraces, real driveways, and easy staging. These are the properties where the evening can run long without anyone feeling crowded.

Yacht charters and slips. Lido Marina Village and the charter fleet operating out of the harbor. Working space aboard is minimal, and the load-in happens down a dock ramp on a schedule set by the captain rather than by you. Tell us at booking that the event is aboard, because it changes the whole plan and we confirm the format against the specific vessel before we commit to it.

Newport Center and the Airport Area. Private client dinners hosted in firm space around Fashion Island and along Jamboree and MacArthur. Building service entrance, after-hours access, and a facilities contact required.

We do not publish a guest minimum or a guest maximum. Tell us the room and the headcount and we will tell you honestly whether the format works there.

The Newport Beach logistics that actually decide the evening

Gate lists. Crystal Cove, Pelican Crest, Big Canyon, Harbor Ridge, and the Newport Coast associations will turn away anyone who is not on the list. Put us on the gate when you submit your guests. A name missing at the kiosk is an entirely preventable delay, and it takes a minute to avoid. Two things worth sending with it: any community rule on service vehicle hours, and how many vehicles the motor court actually holds, because on the narrower Newport Coast streets there is often nowhere legal to leave a second one.

Islands and the Peninsula. Balboa Island and Lido Isle are one-way streets, small bridges, and resident parking with almost no staging room, and the Peninsula tightens further in summer. Plan on a handoff at the door rather than a vehicle sitting out front, and give us a phone contact who is physically at the house.

Aboard. If the dinner is on a charter we need the marina, the slip or guest dock, the vessel name, the captain’s contact, the boarding time, whether power and water are available at the slip, and a shore-side point where we can stage. Dock carts, ramp tides, and a working space the size of a closet are all normal. None of it is a problem when we know before the day.

December. Boat Parade week reshapes traffic and parking around the entire harbor for several nights running, and it turns every bayfront property with a view of the channel into a private venue. If your date falls in that window, say so at booking so the arrival is planned around the parade route rather than into it.

Weeknight timing. Much of the table at a Newport client dinner is driving itself home, and John Wayne Airport sits minutes away with a night departure curfew, so a visiting executive is either staying over or leaving before it. Weeknight dinners here tend to start earlier and end earlier, and we build the arrival backward from the time you want people eating rather than the time on the invitation.

Who this is built for

Estate and house managers in the guarded communities, who usually know the gate procedure, the motor court capacity, and the real seating time before anyone asks. Executive assistants at the Newport Center finance, private wealth, real estate, and law firms, arranging a closing dinner or a client evening that has to run to an agenda. Boat owners and charter hosts, who already understand what it takes to get anything onto a vessel. And families marking something: a milestone birthday, an engagement, a rehearsal dinner, the evening where three generations are at one table and nobody has to drive to a restaurant.

What $4,000 to $8,000 covers, and what moves it

Pricing runs $4,000 to $8,000 per event. Three things move a booking inside that band: the size of the table, how long the progression runs, and what the fish costs in the week of your event. A shorter sequence for a small table sits at the bottom. A longer progression weighted toward the top of what the market has that week sits at the top.

Two things do not move it. Your address inside the city is one, because what you are paying for is the chef’s night and the fish rather than the drive, and the number is the same on Lido Isle as it is in Newport Coast. A per head menu tier is the other, because there is no menu tier. A charter booking is quoted in the same range as a shore-side dinner, though the format sometimes differs, and we will tell you at booking which parts of a shore-side progression translate aboard and which do not.

Events are booked and scheduled individually for your date. The chef went full time on July 1, 2026. Omakase catering carries no delivery fee, no morning cutoff, and no Tuesday through Saturday limit, because none of those are event constraints. Full detail and booking on the private omakase experience page.

If what you actually want is a boxed lunch rather than a coursed dinner, the honest answer is that it is not this service, and the bento box delivery section above is the right one.

Newport Beach FAQ

Bento box delivery

Do you deliver bento boxes in Newport Beach?

Yes. We deliver anywhere in Newport Beach Tuesday through Saturday, including Newport Center and Fashion Island, Corona del Mar, Balboa Island, the Balboa Peninsula, Lido Isle, Newport Coast, Dover Shores, and the airport-area offices around Birch, Dove, Quail, and MacArthur. We do not deliver on Sunday or Monday, although large pre-orders can be accommodated on those days with 2 to 3 days advance notice. Delivery is a $20 flat fee with no order minimum.

How much does bento delivery to Newport Beach cost, and is there a minimum order?

Delivery is a $20 flat fee anywhere in Newport Beach, and there is no order minimum. One box or twenty, the fee is the same. Boxes themselves run from a value line around $70 up to premium boxes around $200.

How far in advance do I need to order bento?

Anything placed after the morning cutoff shown in the delivery table above needs a minimum of 1 day advance notice, and delivery has to land on a Tuesday through Saturday. For Balboa Peninsula and Balboa Island addresses in summer, and for anything going into a guarded Newport Coast community, order the day before so the delivery is not fighting seasonal traffic or a gate list.

Can I pick up my bento order, or send bento to a boat in Newport Harbor?

Pickup is available at our Costa Mesa point, which is the closest of our three pickup locations to Newport Beach, and it is order-ahead only. We are a ghost kitchen, not a restaurant, so there are no walk-ins and nothing is available on the spot. For a harbor event we deliver to a street address, so give us a shoreside point and a person to meet the driver, such as the guest parking at Lido Marina Village or the street entrance to a private dock off Bayside Drive. If your charter leaves early in the day, order-ahead pickup in Costa Mesa is usually the cleaner option.

Private omakase catering

Does the chef come to my Newport Beach home, or do we come to you?

The chef comes to you. Wafu Bento is a ghost kitchen with no dining room, no counter, and no walk-in service at any location, so there is nowhere to come to. For a private omakase event our chef travels to your address with the fish and the tools and serves the courses in your space, whether that is a bayfront patio, a Newport Coast kitchen island, a firm’s private office space in Newport Center, or a chartered vessel at its slip. All we need is a run of counter or table, a sink, refrigerated holding space or room for our own, and power.

How much does a private omakase dinner in Newport Beach cost?

$4,000 to $8,000 per event, quoted and invoiced per event. Where a booking lands in that range depends on the size of the table, how long the progression runs, and what the fish costs in the week of your event. Your address inside the city does not change it, and a charter booking is quoted in the same range as a shore-side dinner. There is no per head price list, because the menu is written for your event rather than chosen from a fixed set.

What days can we book an omakase event, and is the menu ever the same twice?

Any day of the week. Private omakase catering does not follow the Tuesday through Saturday schedule, the morning cutoff, or the $20 delivery fee that apply to bento, and events are scheduled individually for your date. The chef went full time on July 1, 2026. The menu changes every single event, built around what is best that week and around the dietary restrictions and preferences at your table, so hosting three times in a season does not mean serving the same dinner three times.

We are behind a gate in Newport Coast, or the dinner is on a charter. What do you need?

For a gated community, put us on the gate list when you submit your guests. Crystal Cove, Pelican Crest, Big Canyon, Harbor Ridge, and the Newport Coast associations will turn away anyone who is not on it, and a name missing at the kiosk is an entirely preventable delay. Send any community rule on service vehicle hours and how many vehicles the motor court holds. For a charter, we need the marina, the slip or guest dock, the vessel name, the captain’s contact, the boarding time, and whether power and water are available at the slip, and we confirm the format against the specific vessel before we commit to it.
