Japanese Bento Delivered Across Santa Monica, and a Chef Who Comes to You

Santa Monica delivers in three distinct pieces, and each one changes how a drop-off actually happens.

The office corridor is the first. Colorado Avenue and the Cloverfield stretch carry the Water Garden campus near 26th Street, Colorado Center on Broadway, the Lantana media buildings, and the Santa Monica Business Park near the airport, where tech teams, agencies, and post houses order lunch for a room rather than for a person. The second is the Downtown core between Ocean Avenue and 5th Street, where the Third Street Promenade is closed to vehicles and every drop-off actually happens on 2nd Street, 4th Street, Broadway, or Arizona, usually through a loading dock and a security desk. The third is the coast, from the Annenberg Community Beach House on Pacific Coast Highway down through Crescent Bay Park and Ocean Park, where the sand and the bike path are not driveable and the hand-off happens at the curb or in the lot.

Wafu Bento does two separate things in this city. We deliver chef-made Japanese bento boxes to Santa Monica addresses Tuesday through Saturday, $20 flat, no order minimum. And we send a chef to your Santa Monica address to cook and serve a private omakase, priced per event, with the menu written from scratch for that night. We are a ghost kitchen. There is no dining room, no counter, and no walk-in service anywhere in the operation, which is why both services come to you rather than the other way around.

One clarification worth making here, because the phrase is used loosely. “Private omakase” often means a private seat or a back room at a restaurant. That is not what this is. Wafu Bento has no restaurant and no room to sit in. The chef comes to the address you give us and serves there.

Santa Monica delivery notes that actually matter

Downtown buildings between Ocean Avenue and 5th Street route food deliveries through loading docks, so give us a suite number and a contact name at booking. The Promenade itself is pedestrian only, and nothing arrives on it by vehicle. Residential blocks north of Montana Avenue and across Sunset Park are permit zoned, so a leave-at-door instruction moves faster than a curbside wait. For anything at a beach venue, give us the lot and the closest cross street, because there is no vehicle access on the sand or on the bike path.

Five boxes that fit this city

Traditional Chirashi
Built for the desk lunch shift in the Colorado Avenue and Cloverfield offices. One bowl, one lid, eats cleanly at a keyboard or in a conference room without a plate.

Wagyu Uni Bento
For client-facing lunches on Wilshire Boulevard and in the Downtown towers, where the meal is part of the pitch and a delivery app order would undercut the room.

Kyoto Style Temari
Bite-sized and eaten standing up, which is how agency mixers, gallery openings around Bergamot Station, and rooftop gatherings actually work.

Saba Bozushi
Pressed and firm, so it holds its shape through a long transit and a long afternoon. The right call for a beach-adjacent event or a full production day where lunch sits before it is eaten.

Jewelry Box
Our gift presentation box. The one to send as a wrap gift, a closing gift, or a single delivery to a guest staying along the Ocean Avenue hotel block.

Standing weekly office orders

Teams on Colorado, Cloverfield, Broadway, and Wilshire run these as a fixed weekday slot rather than reordering each week. Standing weekly office orders are available in Santa Monica. Ask about setting one up when you book, and we will build the schedule around your floor rather than around ours.

Private Omakase Catering in Santa Monica

What the event actually is

A chef arrives at your Santa Monica address, sets up, and serves a coursed omakase to your table. Not a drop-off, not a tray, and not a seat in someone else’s restaurant. The food is prepared and served where your guests are sitting, and the menu is written for that specific night.

That last part is the whole service. There is no fixed omakase menu at Wafu Bento. Every event gets its own progression, built around what is genuinely good that week and around the actual table in front of us: the allergies, the vegetarian, the guest who eats sushi weekly sitting next to the one who does not. For a Santa Monica company that entertains the same investors and the same recruiting pipeline several times a year, that is the operative detail. The fourth dinner is not a rerun of the first.

Who books it here

Two populations, and they want opposite things from an evening.

The professional side runs on Silicon Beach spillover. Companies along Colorado Avenue and Cloverfield, around the Water Garden, near Bergamot Station, and in the production and post houses scattered across the city entertain in their own space rather than booking restaurants, partly for privacy and partly because the room is already good. What gets booked are investor dinners, closing dinners, recruiting dinners for a candidate they are working hard to land, and the team evening that has to feel like more than catering.

The residential side is oriented to the water and the light. Beachfront houses along Palisades Beach Road, condo residences on Ocean Avenue, the single-family blocks north of Montana, and the smaller lots in Ocean Park and Sunset Park. What these hosts are buying is a specific hour. A dinner on a west-facing deck in July is planned around when the sun actually goes down, and every part of the evening moves when that moves. The marine layer is a real planning input rather than small talk: in May and June an outdoor course that reads beautifully on paper can put guests outside in a cold sea breeze, and that is better decided in advance than at seven o’clock.

The venue reality, by part of the city

Beachfront on Palisades Beach Road. These houses sit directly off Pacific Coast Highway with no driveway to speak of. Load-in is from a narrow shoulder or an assigned space and then down into the property. It works. It just needs to be planned rather than discovered on the night.

Ocean Avenue condo residences. Building service entrance, a freight elevator reservation, a certificate of insurance on file with management, and building service hours that end earlier than your dinner does. All of it routine when it is arranged, all of it a problem when it is not.

North of Montana. Traditional single-family houses with real dining rooms and alley access behind many blocks. Arrival is straightforward and a formal seated progression fits these rooms well.

Ocean Park and Sunset Park. This is where the kitchen question comes up. Most of the bungalow stock here has been remodeled into a compact modern kitchen: a galley run and one island, which is a working surface rather than spare counter. The chef sets up on a counter run, so what matters is linear counter, sink access, and somewhere to stage out of the guests’ way. Tell us what you have and the setup adapts to it. These rooms suit a coursed dinner better than people expect.

Creative and technology offices. Colorado Avenue, the Water Garden, Bergamot Station, and production and post space across the city. Long tables and good rooms, with after-hours access through a facilities contact and a security desk that needs a name on it.

Parking, gates, and closures, citywide. Santa Monica enforces preferential permit parking across much of its residential area. If your street is permit zoned, tell us at booking and tell us where a vehicle can legitimately sit for the load-in. Gated properties and building garages need us on the list or on the calendar the same way your guests do. And the farmers market and event street closures around Downtown, Main Street, and the Third Street area reroute access on set days, which we route around when we have the address early.

What $4,000 to $8,000 covers, and what moves it

Pricing runs $4,000 to $8,000 per event. Three inputs move a booking inside that band, and none of them is the address: headcount, the number of courses, and the fish. A smaller dinner on a shorter progression sits low in the range. A larger evening with a longer sequence and a heavier weighting toward the top of the week’s market sits high in it. The range is the same in Santa Monica as it is in every other city we cater in.

For the corporate side of this city, one clarification saves a lot of back and forth. This is not the service to compare against a per-head office catering quote, and it will lose that comparison every time on arithmetic alone. It is the service you use when the dinner is the point of the evening and the outcome of the conversation matters more than the line item. If the meeting needs feeding rather than hosting, boxed bento is the honest answer and it is in section 7 above.

Scheduling

Events are booked and scheduled individually for your date. Private omakase does not follow the Tuesday through Saturday bento delivery calendar, and the $20 delivery fee and the delivery cutoff do not apply to an event. Our chef went full time on July 1, 2026, so the constraint is the calendar rather than the kitchen. Full detail on the format lives on the private omakase experience page.

Santa Monica FAQ

Bento delivery: Do you deliver bento boxes to Santa Monica, and what does it cost?

Yes. Wafu Bento delivers to every Santa Monica neighborhood, including Downtown, Ocean Park, Sunset Park, Mid-City, Pico, Wilshire Montana, and North of Montana. Delivery runs Tuesday through Saturday for a $20 flat fee with no order minimum, so a single box and a full office order pay the same $20.

Bento delivery: How far in advance do I need to order for Santa Monica delivery?

Delivery runs Tuesday through Saturday. Anything placed after the morning cutoff shown in the delivery table above needs a minimum of 1 day advance notice and goes out on the next delivery day, so an order placed Sunday or Monday goes out Tuesday at the earliest. For a large pre-order on a Sunday or a Monday, allow 2 to 3 days notice.

Bento delivery: Can I pick up my Santa Monica order instead of having it delivered?

Yes. The nearest pickup point to Santa Monica is Gardena, and pickup is order ahead only with no walk-ins. The drive is roughly 17 miles, typically 30 to 45 minutes via the 10 east and the 405 south depending on traffic.

Bento delivery: Can you set up a standing weekly office lunch in Santa Monica?

Yes. Standing weekly office orders are available for teams along Colorado Avenue, Cloverfield, Broadway, and Wilshire Boulevard, and they run as a fixed weekday slot rather than a fresh order each week. Ask about setting one up when you book. Downtown buildings route food through a loading dock, so we will need a suite number and a contact name on the account.

Private omakase: Does the chef come to my Santa Monica home or office?

Yes. That is the service. The chef travels to your Santa Monica address, sets up, and cooks and serves the omakase where your guests are sitting. Wafu Bento is a ghost kitchen with no dining room and no walk-in service at any location, so there is nowhere to come to us instead. Private omakase is catered to your space.

Private omakase: What does a private omakase event in Santa Monica cost?

$4,000 to $8,000 per event. Where a booking lands in that range depends on headcount, the number of courses, and the fish selected for your date. There is no per-head price list, because the menu is written for your event rather than chosen from a fixed set, and the $20 bento delivery fee does not apply to an event.

Private omakase: Can we book a private omakase dinner on a Sunday or a Monday?

Yes. Private omakase events are booked and scheduled individually for your date and are not limited by the Tuesday through Saturday schedule that applies to bento delivery. Our chef went full time on July 1, 2026, which means the constraint on a date is the calendar rather than the kitchen.

Private omakase: What does an Ocean Avenue tower or a beachfront house on Palisades Beach Road need to arrange?

Ocean Avenue residential towers and most Colorado Avenue and Water Garden office buildings require a freight elevator reservation, a certificate of insurance on file with management, and the event on the security desk calendar, and building service hours end earlier than your dinner will. Palisades Beach Road houses sit directly off Pacific Coast Highway with no driveway, so load-in runs from the shoulder or an assigned space and then down into the property. Both are routine when they are arranged at booking.
